Where Does This Last Name Come From? German?
My teacher has a cool last name, it's Glasenapp, he said it was german, so I was just wondering where it came from. All my other teachers have last names like smith, white, ect. lol
Where Does This Last Name Come From? German?
When I looked over at Ancestry, it states the name is from Germany, Pruessen, and Pomeranian in origin. As for the meaning... I couldn't find anything on Glase, so I tried napp and got the following:
1. Altered spelling of German Knapp.
2. German: metonymic occupational name for a bowl and cup maker, from Middle Low German nap 鈥榖owl鈥? 鈥榤ug鈥? or alternatively, from an old personal name formed with an element cognate with Old High German (gi-)nada 鈥榞race鈥?
鈥榖enevolence鈥?
The meaning of knapp in German:
1. German: occupational name or status name from the German word Knapp(e), a variant of Knabe 鈥榶oung unmarried man鈥? In the 15th century this spelling acquired the separate, specialized meanings 鈥榮ervant鈥? 鈥榓pprentice鈥? or 鈥榤iner鈥?
2. German: in Franconia, a nickname for a dexterous or skillful person.
3. English: topographic name for someone who lived by a hillock, Middle English knappe, Old English cn忙pp, or habitational name from any of the several minor places named with the word, in particular Knapp in Hampshire and Knepp in Sussex.
4. German and western Slavic: variant of Knabe.
Glas: glas
1. Jewish (Ashkenazic): variant spelling of Glass.
2. German: variant of Glass 1 or 3.
3. German: from a short form of the medieval personal name Gelasius, the name of a pope (492鈥?6).
4. Welsh: nickname meaning 鈥榞ray鈥? 鈥榞reen鈥? 鈥榮ilver-haired鈥?
glass
1. English and German: metonymic occupational name for a glazier or glass blower, from Old English gl忙s 鈥榞lass鈥?(akin to Glad, referring originally to the bright shine of the material), Middle High German glas.
2. Irish and Scottish: Anglicized form of the epithet glas 鈥榞ray鈥? 鈥榞reen鈥? 鈥榖lue鈥?or any of various Gaelic surnames derived from it.
3. German: altered form of the personal name Klass, a reduced form of Nikolaus (see Nicholas).
4. Jewish (Ashkenazic): ornamental name from German Glass 鈥榞lass鈥? or a metonymic occupational name for a glazier or glass blower.
Reply:I would be willing to put $100 down that it is GERMAN. Family names ending with the double "p" are most likely German - like the name Knopp, Krupp, etc.
Reply:Es ist Deutsch!
Reply:It is German, I looked it up, could not find meaning.
Reply:Von Glasenapp is the name of a former aristocratic estate owner family in Pomerania. I have found a long article on Wikipedia about them, but unfortunately there is no English translation available.
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glasenapp
As the name is existing since the 13th century, before surnames were usual, and there are many people called Glasenapp today, it might have been given (without "von") to farmers, and personnel of the estate, too.
Reply:It is a German last name. It was the last name of my neighbor in Bavaria, I'm 100% sure it's German.
Reply:yeh. it definetly sounds like a german last name. i've studied german since grade 5 nd i'm 16 now.
so it definetly sounds german :)

Name and (German) spelling of late model Volkswagen "Farfignewton"?
Fahrvergnugen. It's a feeling and a slogan, like "Driver's Wanted".
Name and (German) spelling of late model Volkswagen "Farfignewton"?
Fahrvergn眉gen - German: fahren "to drive" and Vergn眉gen "pleasure".
It wasn't a model, it was a marketing slogan.
.
Reply:is that when you poop a cookie?
Reply:it's not a model, it comes from one of their ad campaigns, something like farfegnugen, which supposedly means "awesome to drive" in german.
Reply:Guten Tag Wie gehte es Ihnen? Opps sorry thats good day how goes thing is German.
Fahren is German to travel though I think you have the spelling wrong Newton is the last name of Issac Newton famed Physist and mathmatican and scientist. The way you have it writen is you are having a good drive on the back of a person named Newton, or even the late Prof. Issac Newton himself.

What are the English name, "Easter", and the German, "Ostern", derived from?
Easter
O.E. Eastre (Northumbrian Eostre), from P.Gmc. *Austron, a goddess of fertility and sunrise whose feast was celebrated at the spring equinox, from *austra-, from PIE *aus- "to shine" (especially of the dawn). Bede says Anglo-Saxon Christians adopted her name and many of the celebratory practices for their Mass of Christ's resurrection. Ultimately related to east. Almost all neighboring languages use a variant of L. Pasche to name this holiday. Easter Island so called because it was discovered by Europeans on Easter Sunday, 1722.
What are the English name, "Easter", and the German, "Ostern", derived from?
It can be traced further back to the Chaldean Ish Tar, which was a title of the Babylonian fertility goddess, Semiramis. She has been known by many names in many cultures. (Astarte, Ashtoreth, Asherah, etc.)
Her feast day was celebrated with symbols of fertility: rabbits and eggs. Where English Bibles sometimes say Easter, they should say Passover. Jesus rose at Passover, not Easter.
Reply:They were named after the Anglo-Saxon spring goddess Eostre and closely associated with the spring equinox.

Reply:Eostre the goddess of spring and Her festival Ostara which is on the same day as easter
Reply:Eostre, the saxon goddess of spring.
Reply:Both are derived from the Proto-Germanic "Austron", a goddess of fertility and sunrise whose feast was celebrated at the spring equinox, from "austra-", from the Proto-Indo-European "aus-" meaning "to shine" (especially of the dawn).

I'm seeking the name of a particular German (language) World Cup song?
I've seen the video clip - it's got three young guys in it, and the only words I can remember are "eins, zwei, drei, vier, funf". In the clip they move around a revolving set with images of football on it. I'd love the name of the song and the band.

How do you pronounce the Old German boy/girl name Chay?
I'm not sure if it's pronounced with a "Ch" as in Check or a "Sh" as in Sheep. Please help! :)
How do you pronounce the Old German boy/girl name Chay?
I am German/Irish and it is pronounced with a "Sh" as in "Sheep". You should try Google (type in German name Chay) it will give you results. Good Luck!
Reply:Your Welcome! Kylli is pronounced "Ki-lee, Kay-lee" it all depends how you want to pronounce it..........Good Luck! Report Abuse
Reply:Surprisingly it's a feminine name, pronounced Shay and it means "man".
I had thought that Germans pronounced their C's with a K sound (what I learned in school, and it's been many years) - so I would have thought Kay. Glad I looked it up.

Is ursula a german name?
curious, as i've heard that it's a latin name too.
Is ursula a german name?
As was mentioned, Ursula is originally Latin and means "little female bear". That the name has been a very popular one in Germany has to do with the fact that there has been a lot of devotion for St Ursula, particularly in Cologne (where St Ursula is supposed to have been martyred) and the Rhine area.
Reply:Irene is absolutly right. Ursula comes from latin ursus which means bear. Ursula means little female bear.
In italian it is Orsola and bear in italian is orso.
Reply:Ursula ("small female bear" in Latin): origin latin.
alternatives: Orsa
1.Orsa
2.Orseline
3.Orsola
4. Orsola
Reply:It's Latin, meaning "female bear" or "little bear."
Ursus = Bear
Reply:It is latin and german name
Reply:i don't think it is
Reply:At least I know an Ursula in Germany...we call her Ursl
Reply:It is a Latin name, meaning "baby bear" or "bear cub", but its popularity in Germany arises from the bearer of that name (owch) St Ursula, who is the patron saint of Cologne, where she was martyred, along with a number of virgins, estimated at 11 or 11,000 (a misreading, it is believed, of the original number with the addition of an "M"). The Ursuline order of nuns specialising in the education of girls is named after her, hence the popularity of the name in German speaking countries. More can be read at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Ursul...
Reply:it is very much german
Reply:Ursula is not uncommon in Germany as a female first name. For example, our Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth is Ursula von der Leyen.
Of course the name is originally Latin, but this is true for many, many names.

Is the last name joekurlund german or norwegian?
If it is spelled J酶kurland, then its Norwegian. Norwegian doesn't have the letters 'oe' together. Instead they use the letter 脴. So if it really is 'oe' then it must be German, but it sounds more Norwegian.

Is "Lyman" a real German last name?
If not, what was the original German spelling? I know my ancestors were from German Prussia...
danke!
Is "Lyman" a real German last name?
Surname: Lyman
Recorded in the spellings of Layman, Leyman, Lyman, and possibly Leman, this surname is of pre 7th century Anglo-Saxon origin. It is topographical and describes a person who lived and worked a farm of meadows or grazing lands. The derivation is from the Olde English pre 7th Century "leah", meaning a glade, plus "mann", a status title which implied the person responsible. Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages. Early examples of the base surname include: Ailric de la Leie of Nottinghamshire in the year 1148 and Turgod de la Lea of Warwickshire in 1193, whilst Philip de Lye is recorded in Wiltshire in 1198. The addition of the suffix appears in the early 14th Century (see below), and these were particularly common in the county of Sussex at the beginning of the 14th Century, and to a lesser extent in the neighbouring counties of Kent, Surrey, Essex and Hampshire. Examples of recordings include William Leyman in the Subsidy Rolls of Sussex in 1327, and later John Layman of Suffolk, in the Subsidy Rolls of that county in 1524. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Reiner Leman, and dated 1185 in the rolls of the Knights Templar for the county of Essex. This was during the reign of King Henry 11nd of England, known as "The church builder", 1154 - 1189. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.
Reply:Any last name is "real".. but that does not make it a German name (or not German). The person is who is or isn't German.
You need to know exactly who your ancestors were, and find explicit records on them, and who their parents/ relatives were. If you are in the US, and they were here prior to 1930, then the goal is to find them in the census records. What this will do, is verify who came over to the US and WHEN. Once you have that.. then (depending on the time frame), you will look for immigration records, and also naturalization papers, if they became a citizen. Use those to try and narrow down their exact place of origin.. and again, this WILL depend on the time frame. Most of Eastern Europe had boundaries that changed very frequently.
Also.. keep an open mind as to any spelling. When looking in records.. the name won't always show up "correct" or not. The key point that you have to be concerned with, is if the records actually concern YOUR ancestor.

Is kaufman a Jewish name or a german Christian name or both?
Kaufmann means %26lt;merchant%26gt; in German. The name could have been adopted by a Christian German in the Middle Ages when Christians were adopting last names in German, or in the 18th Century by Jews, when they adopted last names. There is a slight preponderance of Jews holding the name today, but no exclusivity.

Beware of coat of arms peddlers.
Whenever someone wants the meaning or origin of a name, they are furnished with a link to a coat of arms.
There are no laws in the U. S. regarding heraldry and there are companies all over the internet that sell them based solely on a surname. That is not valid. The business is not illegal but certainly not honest.
Not everyone with the same surname comes from the same root. Many coats of arms have the same name. That does not mean everyone with that name is any way related to those who were granted a coat of arms, much less be a direct descendant.
Also, the little family histories that come with them might be your family history and might not.
Reply:According to my source it's both, have a look at the link below,

Reply:It's both. German Jews picked surnames the same way their Christian neighbors did. Over time, some surnames became much more closely tied to Jews than to Christians, but there was no religious exclusivity in most surnames.

What was the name of the three german battleships sunk during ww2?
I'm sorry but their is only TWO true battleships
Bismark and Tirpitz
Scharnhorst %26amp; her sister ship Gneisnau are Battle cruisers
Deutschland (later called Lutzow), Admiral Scheer and Graf Spee are Called armored Ships or "Pocket Battleships"
Bismark was sunk on the 26 of May 1941
by King George the 5th, Rodney, and other smaller craft.
Tirpitz sank the 15 of September 1944 after two strikes by the RAF Landcaster bomber carrying 12,000 lbs Tall Boy bombs.
What was the name of the three german battleships sunk during ww2?
You are probably thinking about Bismarck, Tirpitz and Scharnhorst. Many put the Scharnhorst as a battlecruiser, yet it had more than adaquate armour, but a weak main gun. Plans to upgrade the 11" guns to 15" were overtaken by the war.
Reply:Bismarck, Admiral Graf Spee, Tirpitz.
These are thee I know of.
Reply:First you need to define what is a battleship. Only two ships were "Battleships" according to both sides (Germany and allies)
Some others were called "Pocket Battleships" by the British Royal Navy. This term was applied to ships the German Navy called Heavy Cruisers and to others the Germans called Battleships.
So lets assume that the term Battleship applies to all Pocket Battleships as well.
Bismark (BB) Sunk by combined attack by swordfish aircraft
Tirpitz (BB) Capsized by enemy action on 12 November 1944
Sharnhorst (BBE) Sunk in the Battle of North Cape on 26 December 1943
Gneisenau (BBE) Sunk as blockship in Gotenhafen on March 23, 1945
Admiral Graf Spee (BBE) Sunk in the Battle of the River Plate
Admiral Sheer (BBE) Sunk by bombs 9 April鈥?0 April 1945
Schleswig-Holstein (BBE) struck by three bombs dropped by British planes, caught fire and sank in 39 feet of water
If you include thew Pocket Battleships (BBE) then 7, not 3 were sunk during WW2
If you omit the Pocket Battleships then only 2 True Battleships (BB) were sunk, not 3.
What defines a Warship to a certain type is not so black and white as many civilians think. What makes a Ship a BB rathers than a CA (Battleship vs Cruiser) or a CA vs a CL (Heavy vs light Cruiser)
or what defines a ship as a Frigate vs a Corvette (FF vs FFL) is not so easy to determine. Throughout the years what defines a ship type has been modified and redefined dozens of times. and often there is much overlap.
My own ship from which I take my Screen name, USS Halsey CG-23, was a Guided Missile Cruiser. It did not start out that way however. When first commissioned it was called a DLG rather than a CG. A Destroyer Leader (Guided Missile). The whole Leahy Class was redefined in the early 80's after a major refit.
Reply:Only a German would want to know this....
Reply:Bismarck and Tirpitz are the easy ones.
I didn't know the Germans had more than two.
Reply:The Tirpitz, Bismark, and Scharnhorst were all sunk, however only the Tirpitz and Bismark were Battleships. The latter was a Battle Cruiser or "Pocket Battleship".
Reply:The Bismarck, The Graf Spee and the Tirpitz.
The Graf Spee was scuttled off shore of Montivideo in the battle of the Plate river. the captain was a true officer and gentleman. he sunk nine British merchant ships and never took a life because he took all the british seamen off the boats before sinking them.
The Bismarck was sunk in the north Atlantic three days after sinking the British Battleship HMS HOOD.
The Tirpitz came to its end when it capsized in a Norwegian harbor in 1944 where it had spent almost the entire war.
I jhope that answers your question.

Funny, isn't O'Bama Irish too.
Biden is a German last name, is it not? And Palin is a French last name, is it not?
The United States is the Melting Pot of the world. It is made up of all different kinds of people from all different types of countries. People from different countries came and still come here to be a part of our free nation. That's the whole point. We are all from somewhere else. You can't really deny it, unless you are a Native American.

Is the last name "Stieteler" german(not sure on spelling)?
My last name is Stiteler, however when my great great great grandpa came over to the US our last name was mispelled and since he couldn't read english it was never corrected. The original spelling of my last name is either: Stiteler, Steteler, Steiteler, or Stieteler. Just wondering Thanks
Is the last name "Stieteler" german(not sure on spelling)?
I would think that the reason they misspelled the spelling of the surname is because it is indeed German. The combination of letters can be confusing and thus they would have mixed up the "ei, ie" combination. For example the German word "bei" is pronounced "by" even though it looks like it would be pronounced "bay".
I would guess that the original spelling was "Steiteller". Hope that helps!
Reply:Hi Jerry,
I can`t find any Steiteler at verwandt.de. They`re checking the phone books of Germany, Austria and Swiss.
Anyway it sounds Southern German
Reply:Can you post your gggrandpas name here?
That might help with the research.
I can't seem to find anyone with your surname who was born in Germany, all the way back to 1880 census.

German name for girl?
The word for girl is "Maedchen." Pronounced "MADE-shen"
It's usually spelled with an umlaut (those two dots) over the "a," and no "e" before the D.
It's easy to remember if you recall that English is a German language, so a lot of our words are similar to theirs. Thus: Maedchen ... maiden.
The other respondent is correct -- "Fraulein" is indeed the word for "Miss," as in "Miss Smith asked me to call her Barbara."
Reply:Fraulein-it means "Miss"

Breann Elizabeth (Breann is pronounced like Brianna but with out the a sound at the end!) I was happily born in Germany but now live in dinky little Virginia. I hate this state! I have some artwork by a german artist done during WWII. The name is grahoffer, can't find information on him.
I do know that he studied in New York before the war, but fought on the german side. He was a young man, I believe. Thanks!

Boy, he is obscure. I'd suggest visiting the largest library in your area and searching on their catalog. You can also check out really major state and university libraries to see if there's a reference book on his work or one you can order through Interlibrary Loan.
Check out this site for the Library of Michigan. You can both search their catalog and contact a reference librarian from this site. http://www.michigan.gov/hal

Whats the name of the race of dogs that look like German Shepherds but are all white?
Its A white german shepherd.
You see, AKC disqualifies White german shepherds.
It is a well known fact that the color white has been part of the German Shepherd Dog since its creation. It is also a historical fact that the GSD's foundation dog, Horand von Grafrath (owned by Max von Stephanitz, the founder of the breed), was grandsired by a white-coated dog. Von Stephanitz's based his findings of the White GSD on the genetics of the times. He felt the White GSD carried a lack of pigmentation and genetic problems (which has been disproved in modern times). He also was quoted as saying a dog's working ability should be the primary concern and color a very secondary feature. The German SV (German Shepherd Club of Germany) followed Von Stephanitz's beliefs and in 1933 made the White GSD a disqualification. In the 1960's, the SV banned the White German Shepherd completely. The German Shepherd Dog Club of America, as part of the SV ban, disqualified the White GSD from the conformation ring in 1968. Promoters of the White GSD formed The White German Shepherd Dog Club International shortly before the disqualification of the White. The White German Shepherd Dog Club International adopted a standard for the breed very similar to the GSD standard and started hosting their own conformation events in order to maintain breeding quality dogs. Not much has changed from 1968. The 1990's brought two other White GSD clubs to the breed. The White German Shepherd Dog Club of America have similar beliefs to the WGSDCI in that they believe the white coated GSD is indeed a GSD. The American White Shepherd Association was formed in order to promote the White GSD as a separate breed. Nobody knows what the future holds for the White German Shepherd.
Whats the name of the race of dogs that look like German Shepherds but are all white?
There are white german shepherds, however this is a genetic defect in the breed and a white one is not considered show quality.... There is another breed called a MALINOIS however this dog only comes in a few colors and I have never seen a white one. They are from Belgium and called Belgium Malinois. GOOD LUCK

Is the name Christel Talaska a german name?
A german name?
Christel is German but not Talaska.
Know many Christel but no 'Kristel' here in Germany. But some Germans have foreign names from their ancestors..
Probably some families with the name Talaska are living in Germany...but the origin of the name is not German
Reply:Not at all.
Reply:no, it would be Kristel, german doesn't use the "ch" combo for the hard "k" sound.
Reply:No...it would be Kristel if it was german..and Talaska is definetely not german.
Reply:Christel is the pet name for Christina, a German girl name.
Talaska surname is found in Germany (Prussia and Hungaria)
Reply:Never heard the name "Talaska" here (I'm in the south), but "Christel" is definitely very german. And while it's really spoken like a K (like all words that begin with CH), I've never heard or read of a girl that's written Kristel. And really, it looks more than strange. The people who claim the K were right either have no clue of german or don't know how to write it!
Reply:Christel is a German name. Talaska has possibly its origin in Russia, Poland, Ukraina... But others were wrong, that Christel is written wit "K", that's wrong. This name is pronounced as "Kristel", but the "CH" is used as usual.

How do I say "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die." in German?
If you actually speak German and know what you're talking about and didn't just get your answer from an online translator, please note that.

Hallo. Ich heisse Inigo Montoya. Sie haben mein Vater get枚tet. Vorbereiten zu sterben.

LOL I just had to tell you I love the question.
I think I can actually give this a go:
Guten Tag (or Gr眉ss Gott) Meine Name ist 脥nigo Montoya. Sie hat mein Vater get枚ten. Bereiten Sie sich vor sterben.
That's the first time I have EVER gotten a translator to do something for me that I DIDN'T laugh at! I think I made that grammatically correct, and that no German speaker would laugh at it either. (of course, I only used it for a couple of words).

"Annchen" is a diminutive form of Anna. Anna/Anne/Antje: This popular fem. name has two sources: Germanic and Hebraic. The latter (meaning "grace") predominated and is also found in many Germanic and borrowed variations: Anja (Russian), Anka (Polish), Anke/Antje (Niederdeutsch), 脛nnchen/Annerl (diminutive), Annette. Name the german foreign minister who attempted to lure mexico into the war against the U.S.?
Arthur Zimmermann Foreign Minister from November 22, 1916 to August 6, 1917.
Reply:"The Zimmerman Telegram proposed that Mexico form an alliance with Japan and join the Central Powers against The United States if the U. S. entered the war to aid the Allied Powers. In return, the Germans would help Mexico reconquer territory lost within the States. The U.S. government was enraged and felt betrayed in their quest for peace, while the public turned from a desire for neutrality and urged for the first time that the U.S. enter the war. This new attitude of the public supported President Wilson and drove the United States first to a state of armed neutrality and eventually into the World War."
So the guy's name was Zimmerman.

Is the family name Sigler german?
Yes, so you should be tall, blond and meticulous, but largely unemotional, and you boil most of your food. Your idea of a 6-course meal is three bottles of Dortmunder Union and three bratwursts. %26lt;wry ironic chuckle%26gt;

If your dad married a Chinese lady, it is now Eurasian, in your case. If you are Black, then your ancestors were either owned by or admired someone named Sigler.
If your ancestors moved to London in 1507, it has been English for 500 years.
You can't tell much from surnames. A lot of Chinese named Lee are not related to Robert E. Lee, the confederate general.

Most likely, I bet it was once Zigler. Z's tend to become S's when converted to English. I just received a letter from my Daughter-in-law whom is German, She typed the word December as Dezember.

What does the word Von literally mean in German names particularly in WW2?
As of Manstein etc.
What does the word Von literally mean in German names particularly in WW2?
In German, "von" is a prefix that only landed gentry used in their names. Literally it means "of" (as in "from"). In the old times, it actually meant "the lord of" and was used along with the name of the domain (castle/manor and surrounding lands) the name holder owned.
Reply:"of the" or "from"...usually followed by the city where the ancestral family originates from.
Reply:The literal translation of Von is From. WW II had nothing to to with its usage or popularity. Usage of Von goes back many centuries and does not necessarily mean a person of nobility or means.
Reply:"of" or "from"
Reply:In German, Von (pronounced like English fun) always implies nobility, which means that von Manstein may have been a baron or had some other title. I believe he was a baron.
In Dutch, the prefix VAN, pronounced fahn, to rhyme with on or John) may imply nobility, but in most cases does not.
Reply:It means 'from;. It was used primarily by nobility, which is why it fell out of fashion with the end of the pseudo monarchy, which still existed up until the end of the second European war.

PLOT SUMMARY:
It's the last days of Adolf Hitler, April 1945, and Hitler's personal secretary Traudl Junge finds herself in the Der Fuhrer's bunker. Facing inevitable defeat, Hilter's moods range from defiance to fight or flee, remain loyal or opt for self-preservation. Eva Braun parties while Magda Goebbels kills her children. Great film. Bruno Ganz played Hitler and was terrific but he did win or was nominated for an Oscar. The film itselg however was nominated for Best Foreign Languange Film.

Need to find the name of an (I think) German song containing the lyrics: "Hey! Jy op die eisberg..."?
It contains a guitar part and a section "ooo oo o o oo".
"Jy op die eisberg, so goed" is also in there somewhere.
My spelling is way off I guess as I don't speak the language contained in the song.
Thanks in advance.

Is the name ''Schreck'' german or is it Jewish?
It's German.
Schreck
Usage: German
Extra: Statistics
Means "to frighten, jump" from the Middle High German schrecken.
Is the name ''Schreck'' german or is it Jewish?
Yes it can be both. Germany and/or Jewish.
Reply:The answer is "yes".
What I mean is probably both are true. Schreck is used in German and Yiddish, which is a dialectic derivation of Hebrew and German, or Hebrew and Polish depending on the region.
Hope this helps.
Reply:It's German, whether or not it's possessor is Jewish.
F.e, actor Max Schreck (1879-1936) in the original version of the film "Nosferatu"; also, Julius Schreck(1898-1936), the first commander of the SS and a close friend of Adolf Hitler.
Wikipedia's entry on Max Schreck suggests that the animated character Shrek may be named after the German actor.
