Is "Selig" a German Name?

I'm not quite sure if it is. %26gt;%26gt; Thing is, one of my online roleplay characters is named Selig, and I love german stuff, so out of curiosity I wanted to know. xD I think a german friend of mine said it was, but I don't remember. So please let me know.

Is "Selig" a German Name?
Yes, Selig is an ancient German name that originated in the Rhineland. It is as German as the name Bach.

Spelling variations include Seliger, Selik, Selich, Zelich, Selligman, Seligman, Seligmann, Selichman, and many others.

The name means "blessed".
Reply:Definitely could be German - the word means "blessed" or "happy." I couldn't say for sure that the name is derived from it, but it would be reasonable to think so.
Reply:It's hard to tell sometimes. Jews have co-opted and muddled a whole lot of German/Germanic names.
Reply:I know some people whose last name is Selig and they are Jewish. Not sure of their country of origin.
Reply:Yes, "Selig" is definitely a surname used in German speaking countries.
