As far as I'm aware the surname "Jahn" is quite common in Northern Germany, and most liguists take it to be a short form of the first name "Johann" (=John) which used to be very common, the name also exists as a surname in the long form.
That it has got anything to do with slavonic people is news to me.
N.b. : not every information on the internet is correct.
Is jahn a common german name?
Johann = John: an oldfashioned first name, not very common these days
Jahn: surname, quite frequent in Germany
Reply:yes it's no doubt here let me clear u one thing about jahn
Jahn means "Slavic;' which excludes the many ethnic minorities who were later reabsorbed into the Soviet empire.)
Reply:sure is
Reply:On the list of the most common German surnames, Jahn is no. 117. It's more frequent in the centre of Germany, e.g. no. 11 in Thuringia, no. 14 in Brandenburg etc.
