Is the last name "Stieteler" german(not sure on spelling)?

My last name is Stiteler,however when my great great great grandpa came over to the US our last name was mispelled and since he couldn't read english it was never corrected. The original spelling of my last name is either: Stiteler, Steteler, Steiteler, or Stieteler. Just wondering Thanks

I would think that the reason they misspelled the spelling of the surname is because it is indeed German. The combination of letters can be confusing and thus they would have mixed up the "ei, ie" combination. For example the German word "bei" is pronounced "by" even though it looks like it would be pronounced "bay".





I would guess that the original spelling was "Steiteller". Hope that helps!

I can`t find any Steiteler at verwandt.de. They`re checking the phone books of Germany, Austria and Swiss.
