Is Bloss a German name? I have been told it is French...?

How is this name pronounced? Bloss with a short o or long o?.......If it has the long o sound, probably French/German, right on the border. Gross is from the German reight of passage so Bloss definitely would be of German decent......My last name is Weicheret, German, and it seems Bloss would be more German than French......you might want to Google this question.....you might find some interesting facts on the Bloss Family Album. Good luck my dear German comrade. Long live Hitler....I'm a teaser of course.

Bloss

German: from Middle High German bloz 鈥榥aked鈥? 鈥榙estitute鈥? applied as a nickname for a poor person, or for someone who dressed inappropriately, or for a man without a beard.

German: variant of Blass.

Swedish: unexplained; possibly an adoption of the German name.

Reply:When I searched rootsweb, there were about 6,000+ Bloss as a last name. The earliest date I found in Germany was 1662. This site is a free site and it listed several databases to search for your ancestors. It also listed Sweden and a couple other Countries. Sometimes, the ancestor that you are looking for, this site has people who had already started the family name. I have found on some of mine, they would give the origin of the name.
