Is Kuffrey a German Last Name?

I've only found a few records that identify any origins. One is a man from Syria who registered for the draft in WWI. Another shows it's an "Americanization" of the Irish name Caffrey. The third has it coming from Switzerland in 1856. That one doesn't identify a kanton and only shows they left from LeHavre for Canada.

It's not in any of the phone directories for any of the German-speaking countries in Europe.

So the long and short of it that this probably isn't the original spelling from "the old country" and was slaughtered after the immigrants arrived in North America.

The Charles Kuffrey referred to was actually a resident of Atlanta, Georgia. He was born in Syria on the date shown. To my knowledge he never lived in New York though he had relatives in Providence, RI. Report Abuse

Reply:I checked on ancestry.com and there are a few references to KUFFREY.

In 1920 there is one family in Conn. whose name is KUFFREY. One of the people was born in Ireland and another in Wales.

The one Charles G. Kuffrey I am familiar with was born on 12/25/1894 in the Syrian Arab Republic and died in March 1981. He served in WW1 and lived almost his entire life in Atlanta, GA. He had 5 sons and 2 daughters and was a respected commercial photographer in the Atlanta area throughout his career. He had 2 sons that went on to become commercial photographers themselves. To my knowledge the Kuffrey name was derived in some way from the French. The Senior Charles Kuffrey was married to Mary Kuffrey (maiden name "Andrews").
