Kleinsasser is a German name?

Is "Kleinsasser" a Germane name? Is it a surname?

Thank you.

Kleinsasser is a German name?
Kleinsasser is somehow German... but when you google the name mostly Austrian websites come up, so I guess Kleinsasser is an Austrian family name.
Reply:The first part of this word (Klein) in my opinion means small in German.

As for the 'sasser' latter part, this sounds like a universal worm. Jose
Reply:Yes, it most likely is in the wider sense of the word, i.e. it can be Swiss or Austrian too. It is a surname well enough.

"Klein" means small, and "sasser" is a term for a social status. This goes back to times when e.g. peasants had a small plot of land, but were free and not serfs. "Sasser" is a cognate of "sitzen", which means "to sit"; it is also related to "settle". Hence a literal translation might be "Small Settler".
